Viral Countdown

10 01 2010

There was recently an article in total film recently about the best viral adverts for films and it got me thinking, will this kind of advertising become common place as the increase in internet usage far out passes that of other mediums. District 9 was one of the most recent films i can think of. They posted adverts promoting human only bus stop ect. This generated a lot of media interest and the film was incredibly successful.

Dark knight also used a lot of viral advertising both online and real life events to create a kind of alternate reality game to promote  it. It’s not just Films that have viral advertising though, the Cadbury’s Gorilla advert received heavy circulation on websites such as Youtube and many bands have enjoyed succesful viral advertising such as nine inch nails, radiohead and one of my personal favorite bands Relient k. Now the success of viral campaigns often remains unknown but i think one of the clearest most recent examples of how succesful it can be is the recent Rage Against the Machine vs xfactor 2009 Christmas number 1 campaign. Viral campaigners protested against the over saturation of x factor singles in the chart. It sold 502,000 copies and won. It has seriously rattled record companies in fear that it might happen again. Talk about power to the people!

My Top 5 Television Programes of the Decade

8 01 2010

Ok it is the start of 2010 and I thought I would embark upon the difficult task of choosing my top 5 television programmes of the decade. I tried to choose programmes that werent just entertaining, but had something which made it unique and special and I must admit I found it hard to rummage through the hordes and hordes of reality television. I also have to admit that I have yet to see some of the top television but this is the list I came up with.

5. Inbetweeners- A comedy about teenagers enduring all the hardships of puberty and loving it. While on the surface it seems like another attempt by E4 using shock and awe tactics to gain viewers, the script is witty and the comedy is fast paced and fresh. This show, promoted as the ’Anti-skins’, doesn’t show teenagers having sex, doing drugs or getting drunk. It shows them falling flat on their faces. I look forward to seeing the next season of this show and i see great things happening for Simon Bird (the main character Will) and the writers of this deceptively appealing television.

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer- A personal favourite of mine and one that many people wouldn’t agree with, but stick with me on this. Joss Whedon’s longest running and by far most successful, showed what he could do when fox wasnt there to cut him down. The show fused high-octane action and a set of characters that easily compared to that of friends in their closeness and likeability. This show truly blossomed during its more artistic moments. The episode “The body” which showed the death of Buffy’s mother was truly unique from the other episodes. It included no diagetic soundtrack and used long camera shots and moments of silence to show the boredom of death. I like most of the traditional episodes, but the ones which show how clever the writers and Whedon are, clearly stand out.

3. The Office- The British version (although American is good), is a truly British show and one that tried something new, ran with it, and came out with a winner. Its style of subtle documentary turned comedy was one that worked especially well and although many people dislike Gervais, the persona that he added to his character is what often made the show so funny. Not to slate all the other shows on this list, but Gervais also did a wise thing in ending the show after two series, making sure the show stayed true to its intentions and earned it a place  in television history.

2. Peep show- Another British comedy that weaves drama in with its many laughs and still manages to support its style and personality. Whilst most comedys are very obviously so, peep show is more subtle and you often feel more rewarded when something is funny.

1. Lost- I haven’t got enough room to write all the points about lost which make me love it the way I do. It is in my opinion the cleverest and most rewarding show I have ever seen. It is impossible to just drop into lost in its third or even second season. The Lost world waits for no man and for those who have watched it from its opening, it has been a confusing, complex tale of mystery, myth and time travel. There are references to other documents that influence it and the writers and directors constantly weave into the narratives. ‘The Looking Glass’ a Dharma initiative station clearly references the novel from Lewis Carroll and it is this kind of intuitive writing, engaging storyline and immensely deep characters that make lost the promising show that it is. I like many others will watch the concluding season in February. Then give up tv FOREVER!!!!…. or maybe just a couple of days.

Review to a kill!

17 12 2009

Ok bad title. Finished my work in projections this week and I have learnt a lot! my final shift was on my own. Clearly showing they trusted me with the very very expensive projectors was quite daunting. I asked one of the projectors if people would be fired if one of the projectors broke, his response “ohhh yes!”. Was a bit worrying. I learnt how to lace the film correctly as well as more technical things such as the difference between scope and widescreen film formats. different sound formats and a lot more about the process of distribution of films. I hope to go up there again in the future. I saw Where the wild things are this week, which was very good but definitely not a kids film. All the creatures personified a different part of max’s personality and this i thought was a great addition. I thought the person who  had a very hard job, he had to create a story that did justice to the well-loved children’s book and a story that worked well as a full length film. yeh… it was very good.

Life in the 35mm lane

30 11 2009

Today I had my second day in projections and I got to say it’s a lot more interesting that I foresaw. The first day involved a lot of paper work but today I had to load the films into the projector and was told a great deal more about the way films come into the cinema and the steps before they go out to an audience. I learnt quite a few things that I didn’t know before, a lot is technical (such as that most of the films are shot in 35mm print) but I also learnt that house lights, the curtain opening and the soundtrack are all activated through triggers that are inserted into the film. Doubtless I will learn a lot more interesting stuff when I get more acquainted but at the moment i am content and ready to learn more!

All We Need Is Video Ga Ga

18 11 2009

You may have guessed but one of my favourite bands are Queen. So this post is all about short films. I just love how they can be so powerful. So thought-provoking and so clever. There are so many good ones, that you finish watching and are extremely effected by this film usually under ten minutes. Here are some of my favourites that i found while searching on YouTube a long time ago. Give them a watch and almost certain they will affect you too.

Number 1. INSiDE (by Trevor Sands)

Quite a simple and maybe predictable film but very well shot and an interesting way of portraying a fairly basic idea.

Number 2. Owl Creek Bridge (I think it’s by  John  Giwa-Amu)

Such a sad film. powerful. Emotive. Enough said.

Number 3 Winner Takes All (by Helen Grace)

A good funny short film. With Chico :P

Thats all for now. I hope you like them like i did and expect more in the future!

Sim(ple) City

18 11 2009

Welcome people. First blog.

To start, here is a link to a video i did in As level media. Bad acting, lots of mistakes, but hey practice makes perfect. We got full marks so clearly did something right with the theory work to go with it. Have a look, see what you think and what ever you do…. don’t judge me (or do if you like it)

Have put in a request to be moved upstairs to projections in the cinema  i work at, working on a new script and trying to relocate some work i did in sixth form on an alien invasion themed radio story! Wish me luck!
